About Dhow House
The House
Inspired as much by the location – the sea, the people, the island’s history – as she is by the sensibilities of European interior design, Katy Barker has created a home whose parts are equal to the whole.
Described by The Times as being at the ‘top of the food chain’ when it comes to Lamu property options, and recommended by everyone from Conde Nast to Harpers Bazaar, Dhow House is a three story beach house frequented by, among others, Tracy Emin, Marianne Faithful and Paul Allen.
Living and Dinning
The living and dining areas are beautifully interconnected, with the sunken living room serving as the social heart of the home.
Designed as part of the courtyard house, this space flows harmoniously with the surrounding courtyard, creating a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living.
The adjacent dining area, positioned next
to the kitchen, adds to the fluidity of the design, offering an inviting space for shared meals and gatherings.
The Bedrooms
Dhow House offers seven luxurious, ensuite bedrooms, comfortably hosting up to 14 guests in a beautifully serene setting.
Each bedroom reflects the elegance of Lamu’s heritage with stone floors, intricately carved furniture, and shuttered windows that welcome the island’s soft light. Carefully selected art pieces add to the ambiance, with every detail thoughtfully arranged to create a warm, uncluttered space.
Each bedroom is designed as a private retreat, inviting relaxation in an exquisite coastal atmosphere.

Other Amenities
Yoga
The top circular terrace of Dhow House is a dedicated yoga and meditation space, offering stunning views over the house, garden, and ocean. At sunrise and sunset, you can witness the island’s beauty and watch the parade of dhows sailing through the estuary. This serene space also doubles as a fantastic spot for entertaining guests.

The Bar
Our stunning bar, nestled in the central courtyard and crafted by our architect, is a masterpiece of design. The finely plastered walls are adorned with natural coral accents, while two circular openings in the ceiling invite glimpses of the sky and create a sense of fluid movement.
Architect-designed bar stools, handcrafted by local artisans, perfectly complement the aesthetic.
The front of the bar, decorated with sliced coral, beautifully reflects the architect’s vision for harmony and form, accentuated by the circular wall elements and open ceiling.
